What to read on the plane for international travelers

These are books we have enjoyed on long flights. The book picture is a direct link to the appropriate page in Amazon.com.

England, England
by Julian Barnes

Imagine an England where everything the tourist wants to visit has been recreated in a theme park on the Isle of Wight. This is one of the funniest satires we have read and recommend it to anyone going to England.

France
by John Burningham

From airplane seat to armchair, this is one of the best books about France that we have read. The author loves the country, yet turns a critical eye on the eccentricities of the French.

Under the Tuscan Sun
Bella Tuscany
by Frances Mayes

Ms Mayes is a California creative writing teacher who spends her spare time in Italy. Planning a trip to Italy? Read these books on the plane.

A Year in Provence
Toujours Provence
Encore Provence
French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork and Corkscrew

by Peter Mayle

Mr Mayle is a former advertising executive who quit the rat race to live in southern France. Read his books and have a good laugh.

Into Thin Air
by Jon Krakauer

This is the book to read when you are stuck on the ground, cooling your heels while your flight is delayed due to weather or mechanical difficulties. Jon Krakauer is a wonderful writer and never better than when telling the story of the Mount Everest 1996 expeditions. Eight people lost their lives during a sudden severe storm that swept over the mountain. Trust us: Read this book, then count your blessings.

Pole to Pole
Michael Palin's Hemingway's Adventures

by Michael Palin

Mr Palin is a former Python who has traveled all over the world with the BBC. He is a wonderful writer. These books are full of photos and are not quite small enough for airplane reading, but great for the armchair.

Mr Palin has also written:
Around the World in 80 Days : Companion to the PBS Series (Best of the BBC)

Full Circle: One Man's Journey by Air, Train,Boat and Occasionally Very Sore Feet Around the 50,000 Miles of the Pacific Rim

08/09/2003

This is a MUST READ for international travelers. It concerns protecting yourself from pickpockets and other scam artists.
