This table has links to books, book/cassette and book/CD beginning
language courses that will familiarize you with the basic elements of a
foreign language. This is, often, just enough to get by. You will learn
phrases appropriate for crossing a border, checking into a hotel, ordering
a meal and asking directions. Generally you have a choice of just a
paperback book, a book and audio cassette or CD or a audio cassette and an
accompanying script booklet. CD's are more durable, but some prefer audio
cassettes because a difficult passage can be repeated over and over by
simply pressing the "Back" then "Play" buttons.
Travel Wise: Compact, designed for
international travelers as well as students. The audio cassette and book
can be used at home, then the book taken on the trip.
Fast and Fun Way: This course for the
international traveler comes with gummed labels, vocabularly cards and
other things to make language learning fun and relatively painless.
At A Glance /
Now You're Talking: "At A Glance" is a bilingual phrase book
for international travelers. "Now You're Talking" is the same phrase
book plus an audio cassette.
Getting By: A concise, mini-course for
travelers. Audio cassettes have true-to-life conversations.
On The Go/On The Road: This is ideal for
those who have time for audio cassettes but not long book explanations.
Joggers, commuters, gym workout buffs and others will appreciate this
series. "On The Go" is the beginning level; "On The
Road" is the next level.
Express Track: Designed for students and
travelers, this course offers information about the local culture. The
audio cassette includes situations faced by business and leisure
travelers.
Business Traveler: List of business words
and phrases useful for the business traveler.
Just Listen 'N Learn: Recordings of
"ordinary" voices in real situations, not just trained actors in
a studio. We used this course to learn French before going to Paris and

E-Z: A course designed for travelers, including
instruction on vocabularly and grammar. This is good for the serious
beginner.
Quick Check: A series of fun,
memory-jogging games and puzzles designed to review the basics for someone
with an existing beginning knowledge of the language. If you took the
language in high school and just need a review, this might work for you.
Vocabularly Trainer: A course for
beginners emphasizing words and their meanings. The word list was chosen
to be of most use to travelers in airports, hotels, restaurants and asking
directions.
Mastering Business Vocabularly:
Extensive list of business words and phrases for the business traveler.
Rick Steves: Rick offers dictionary and
phrase books for the budget traveler.
