This is a table of official foreign embassies in the United States. Most are located in Washington, DC, and have the telephone area code 202. Others are located in New York and other cities. These locations are noted in the "Note" column. Hyperlinks to as many US embassies as we were able to find are noted.

US Embassies and consulates in foreign countries are another useful source of inforation for visiting Americans. They "know the ropes" and can give you advice specific to that country and political situation.

If you are planning to visit a foreign nation, you are well advised to acertain in advance the requirements for entry to their country. This will save you time, trouble and money at the border. Here are a few things to query:

  • Visa required in advance of the trip vs issued routinely at the point of entry
  • Cost of visa and time to allow for issuance
  • Tourist vs Business visa requirements
  • Length of stay restrictions
  • Multiple entry vs single entry visas
  • Requirements for local sponsorship
  • Proof of financial responsibility
  • Return or onward air or surface tickets requirements
  • Requirements for HIV testing, vaccinations, etc
  • Entry prohibited due to evidence of travel to a third country
  • Tourist and visitor information

Schengen Visa Information: Visitors to the Schengen Agreement countries need apply for a visa only to the country of the main or first destination, then travel freely within other Schengen nations. Be aware that the traveler may still be denied entry based on specific requirements for an individual nation. For more information, see the Schengen Agreement web page.

Note: US citizens need a Treasury Dept license in order to engage in any transactions related to travel to and within Cuba, North Korea, Libya, Iran or Iraq. (Including use of US currency).  US citizens should contact the Licensing Division, Office of Foreign Assets Control, Department of the Treasury (202-622-0077).
